Lok Sabha elections: Congress fields Karti Chidambaram in Sivaganga

Now the Congress is part of the DMK-led alliance, while BJP is part of the AIADMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu. In 2014, while Chidambaram expressed his reluctance to contest and sought the ticket for his son, Karti Chidambaram, it was given to him.Since Congress contested alone in 2014 Lok Sabha polls in Tamil Nadu, Karti came fourth, after AIADMK, DMK and BJP candidates. BJP's H Raja has been fielded in Sivaganga on behalf of the AIADMK-led alliance. "The Congress party is yet to announce candidates in several constituencies, especially where the sons of senior Congress leaders have sought tickets," TNCC president K S Alagiri told reporters on Sunday morning, when he accompanied Congress party candidates to call on DMK president M K Stalin.Sivaganga constituency was represented by senior Congress leader P Chidambaram from 1984 until 2014, barring a lone term 1999-2004. This had led to intrigue, with different theories floating around over the party's candidate.

CHENNAI: The suspense over who would be the Congress candidate in Sivaganga finally ended on Sunday evening, with the party formally clearing Karti Chidambaram 's name as its candidate in the constituency.While the Congress on Friday revealed the names of its candidates for nine out of 10 Lok Sabha seats, allotted to it in the DMK-led alliance in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, it withheld a formal announcement for Sivaganga.
