Roller coaster car fails to stop, 4 injured

CHENNAI: Four youths had a narrow escape after the roller coaster they were riding on failed to stop and rammed another one due to mechanical fault at an amusement park on East Coast Road on Wednesday. However, due to mechanical fault, the roller coaster continued to move and rammed another roller coaster stationed on the same track.Those sitting in the front compartments took the hit while the others escaped unhurt.Witnesses also told police during questioning they heard people screaming after a huge noise. As the ride was about to stop near a platform, Srinivasan attempted to apply brakes. The amusement park employees cordoned off the area after the incident.The Neelankarai police have registered a case. Operator Srinivasan, 21, a resident of Neelankarai , gave them instructions before starting the ride.

Police arrested the operator of the ride for his negligence. Police quoting the doctors at Gleneagles Global Hospital in Pallikaranaisaid the injured, all school and college students, are out of danger.One of the injured students C Richard 20, a resident of Poonamallee , suffered a fracture in one of his ribs as he hit hard against a metal frame, police said. Except Richard, all the others P Arun Priya, 20, a resident of Madhavaram, S Aditi, 15, and P Krishnan, 9, both are from Casa Grande in Thalambur were treated as out-patients and discharged.An investigation officer said while Aditi and Krishnan are school students, the other two study at college on the outskirts of the city.Witnesses told police about 20 people took the ride. Operator Srinivasan, 21, a resident of Neelankarai , gave them instructions before starting the ride. He also ensured the locks were in place. As the ride was about to stop near a platform, Srinivasan attempted to apply brakes. However, due to mechanical fault, the roller coaster continued to move and rammed another roller coaster stationed on the same track.Those sitting in the front compartments took the hit while the others escaped unhurt.Witnesses also told police during questioning they heard people screaming after a huge noise. The injured were rescued immediately and rushed to the corporate hospital. The amusement park employees cordoned off the area after the incident.The Neelankarai police have registered a case.
