Second non-brahmin priest appointed in a temple in Tamil Nadu

P Thyagarajan of Madurai, the second government-trained non-Brahmin named a temple priest, has been posted to a Vinayaka Temple in Nagamalai near Madurai.

After a gap of almost two years, Tamil Nadu got its second non-brahmin priest. The first such appointment, after protests and court cases, was made in 2018.

P Thyagarajan of Madurai, the second government-trained non-Brahmin named a temple priest, has been posted to a Vinayaka Temple in Nagamalai near Madurai. “After waiting nearly 13 years, I’m glad finally I got this job,” said the 36-year-old, among the 206 non-brahmins priest trained by the government in 2007-08. One of them died and other 203 are still waiting to be recruited, depending on marriages, housewarming ceremonies and consecration in small private temples for living.
