Santhakulam custodial death: CBI files chargesheet; names nine officials

The CBI had registered two cases on July 7 related to the allegations of custodial death of the father-son duo -- P Jeyaraj and J Benniks -- in Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu.

The Central Bureau of Investigation, in the case of Sathankulam alleged custodial deaths of father-son duo in Tamil Nadu which created a nationwide outrage, has filed a chargesheet against nine police officials who were posted at the Sathankulam police station where the alleged torture took place.

The police personnel includes an inspector/SHO, two SIs, two head constables and four constables. These police personnel had been arrested during the investigation and kept under judicial custody. One more accused, then a sub-inspector, died during the investigation.

The CBI had registered two cases on July 7 related to the allegations of custodial death of the father-son duo -- P Jeyaraj and J Benniks -- in Kovilpatti, Tamil Nadu. The cases were filed based on the request of the state government and a notification of the central government.

The CBI is also investigating the role of other persons in the case.

In August, the CBI had told the Madras High Court that the father-son duo died after suffering multiple injuries.
