During his speech, Thirumavalavan talked about how Manusmriti degrades women and quoted, "Women are prostitutes and that`s how they have been created by God."

Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi in Tamil Nadu has demanded ban on the Hindu religious scripture `Manusmriti` citing increasing cases of violence against women.

VCK chief and Lok Sabha Member of Parliament Thol. Thirumavalavan on Friday urged his party workers to take part in the protest organised on October 24 in large numbers and announced that he will be leading the protest in Chennai.

Explaining the reasons behind seeking a ban on Manusmriti, Thirumavalavan said, " Today we are seeing that violence against women is on the rise. They are being subjected to a lot of harassment. Our ancestors have pointed out that Manu Dharma, which has been passed on from one generation to another, is the root cause of this."

Further, he went on to say that social reformers like Dr BR Ambedkar and Periyar had denounced and burned the copies of Manu Dharma as they believed that it oppressed women.

A video clip of Thirumavalavan speaking during a webinar on Manusmrithi has gone viral on social media platforms.

During his speech, Thirumavalavan talked about how Manusmriti degrades women and quoted, "Women are prostitutes and that`s how they have been created by God."

Several social media users, especially the right-wing, took objection to the statements made by Thirumavalavan and accused him of making derogatory remarks against women.

Thirumavalavan, however, clarified that he was only quoting what was said about women in Manusmriti and said that a portion of his video has been taken out of context.
