Periyar Statue desecrated in Tamil Nadu by pouring saffron paint on it

Statue of late social reformer Periyar E V Ramaswamy was desecrated by some unidentified people in a village in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu on Monday night by pouring saffron paint on it.

After being alerted by the villagers, a police team led by Oddanchatram deputy superintendent of police K Ashokan reached the spot and conducted an inquiry.

Politics over the incident is also started as a large number of DMK members gathered around the village and urged police to arrest anti-social elements behind the act.

Palani DMK MLA I P Senthil Kumar also visited the village and garlanded the statue.

Based on a complaint, the Reddiyarchatram police registered a case. Ashokan said a special team had been formed to nab the suspects. “We have got some vital clues, and the suspects would be arrested at the earliest,” he said.
