Chennai: The Greater Chennai police have intensified its hunt for gangsters to maintain law and order in the city and to bring down the crime rate. Close on the heels of the arrest of notorious gangster 'CD' Mani another rowdy 'Kakkathoppu' Balaji who was wanted in more than 55 cases was arrested on Sunday. Following his arrest city police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal said the crackdown on rowdy elements will continue in the coming weeks. According to police P Manikandan aka 'CD' Mani was spotted cruising in a luxury car and the police team started following him. Police claimed that Mani opened fire on the police team pursuing him and jumped off a bridge to evade arrest but in vain.

Close on the heels of the arrest of notorious gangster CD Mani another rowdy Kakkathoppu Balaji who was wanted in more than 55 cases was arrested on Sunday. Police said he sustained fractures on the leg and hand when he tried to escape from custody. The latest arrest was for violating his bail condition. The 38-year-old gangster who has already been detained under Goondas Act 10 times was arrested by Guindy police in 2017 and was later released on bail. However he was arrested in connection with another case and remanded again. Balaji who was released from prison on 25 May did not appear at the police station as directed. A hunt was launched for him again and amidst reports that he was secured from his hideout in Villupuram police maintained that he was arrested in the city. Following his arrest city police Commissioner Shankar Jiwal said the crackdown on rowdy elements will continue in the coming weeks. It may be recalled that CD Mani was arrested by the police after a dramatic chase when he attempted to escape after firing at the police and jumped from a bridge in Porur. He was involved in more than 35 cases including five murders and attempted to murder cases reported in the city. According to police P Manikandan aka CD Mani was spotted cruising in a luxury car and the police team started following him. Police claimed that Mani opened fire on the police team pursuing him and jumped off a bridge to evade arrest but in vain. In the melee that ensued Mani and a Sub-Inspector Balakrishnan suffered injuries the police said.
