All liquor shops and bars witnessed huge crowds after the state allowed the reopening on Monday, June 14. Liquor shops were closed after the government announced a full lockdown to contain the spread of Covid-19.

The Tamil Nadu State Marketing Corporation (TASMAC) has sold liquor worth Rs 164 crore in the state in just one day.

According to the TASMAC report, Madurai region saw the highest sales of Rs 49.54 crore, followed by Chennai region with Rs 42.96 crore. Liquor worth Rs 38.72 crore was sold in Salem and Rs 33.65 crore in Trichy region.

However, there was no sale in the Coimbatore region as shops in the area remained closed due to the high number of COVID-19 cases. Shops are closed in Nilgiris, Erode, Salem, Tiruppur, Karur, Namakkal, Thanjavur, Thiruvavur, Nagapattinam and Mayiladuthurai as the number of cases is high.

Of the 5,338 shops in Tamil Nadu, 2,900 reopened on Monday.

Earlier, the state government had announced that salons, parks and state-run liquor shops will reopen on June 14 in 27 districts after a gap of thirty-five days in the state and extended the lockdown till the morning of June 21. Religious and tourist places will remain closed and no public or private bus service will be started during the extended period of lockdown.
