MADURAI: Madurai Railway Division carried out a 72-hours cross country check across railway stations against ticketless travel and smoking and littering from April 14 to April 16.The division has collected a fine of Rs 1,90,640 out of 441 cases booked in these days. Discarding a trash item in railway station other than in a trash bin could cost a commuter," he said. Among them, a huge chunk of Rs 1,51,205 has been realised from 326 cases of ticketless travelling.Sixteen cases of irregular travelling cases have been booked on irregular travelling collecting Rs 10,280. Eight cases of smoking and littering have been booked collecting the fine amount of Rs 1,600.There were 91 cases of irregularities on luggage ticketing, and railway officials have slapped the fine of Rs 27,555. The division deployed an 18-member squad on the first two days and a 14-member squad on third day.Senior divisional commercial manager E Harikrishnan said they were going to intensify the drive against littering and smoking in railway station premises."To a large extend, commuters are aware that smoking is an offence but there is not much awareness on littering. In fact, littering is serious offense inviting the fine of Rs 500 and people are not aware of it. Discarding a trash item in railway station other than in a trash bin could cost a commuter," he said.
