Metropolitan Transport Corporation (MTC) must be accustomed to receiving requests from bus commuters to have bus stops shifted. Recently, they had such a request from an unlikely quarter — motorists. Motorists navigating the intersection of Madambakkam Main Road and Velachery Main Road in Rajakilpakkam regularly have appealed to MTC to shift a bus stop locate near the Rajakilpakkam signal. As Madambakkam Main Road is too narrow near the bus stop, motorists coming from Camp Road and East Tambaram find it difficult to move forward when buses 51G (East Tambaram – Medavakkam Road Junction) and S3 (Chromepet – Madambakkam) halt at the stop. Motorists are forced to wait behind the buses. As the stretch is narrow, these motorists cannot overtake the buses. By the time they manage to move forward, the signal for motorists from Medavakkam to East Tambaram turns green. So, besides the unncessary wait behind the buses at the stop, the motorists have to wait at the signal for few more minutes. B. Krishnan, a resident of Madambakkam, says, “A bus stop can be introduced before the intersection on Velachery Main Road, towards Sembakkam, as there is enough space there.” To avoid waiting behind the buses at the bus stop, several motorists tend to overtake the buses, putting motorists coming in the opposite direction in a fix. “The bus stop can also be relocated near the intersection of Ponniamman Kovil Street and Madambakkam Main Road, Rajakilpakkam,” M. Ravi, a motorist, said. When contacted, MTC officials said a decision on relocating the bus stop could be taken only after conducting a feasibility study.
