Court flays Dhinakaran for delaying trial in FERA case

CHENNAI: AIADMK (Amma) deputy general secretary TTV Dhinakaran came under fire in the economic offences court - I here for having absented himself from trial in a FERA violation case against him.Dhinakaran is facing two FERA (Foreign Exchange Regulation Act) violation cases registered against him by the Enforcement Directorate during 1995-96. She charged them with delaying the proceedings during the framing of charges and now as well.When Jeenasenan said the court was biased in favour of the ED, the judge expressed her displeasure at the accusation and said she conducted the case as per law and the high court directive and that there was no need to favour any side.She then posted the matter to June 29 and made it clear that the trial would proceed ahead even if Dhinakaran was not present on that day. The cases relate to transfer of huge sums of money to the UK through illegal means for starting a hotel and winery in that country.Dhinakaran was supposed to cross-examine the prosecution witnesses in one of the cases on Thursday.When the matter was taken by judge S Malarmathi on Thursday, Dhinakaran's counsel Jeenasenan submitted that his side was not ready for cross-examine the witnesses and that he needed an adjournment.Judge Malarmathi, however, rapped the defence side and reminded it that the case had been dragging on for more than two decades.
