Archana Ramasundaram may replace DGP T K Rajendran

While Rajendran (1984 batch) is set to retire on June 30, Archana, an IPS officer of the 1980 batch, is scheduled to retire in October. CHENNAI: Amid talk that director general of police (law and order) T K Rajendran could be given an extension of three to six months, a meeting between Archana Ramasundaram , his senior in service, and chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami in Delhi has set off speculation that she could be the next DGP. The other eligible IPS officers in the rank of DGP have also tried through various power centres to get the post in the state. At the time, Archana was a strong contender for the post of director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Archana then moved the courts after a prolonged legal battle managed to win the cases.Things have changed in the state after the demise of J Jayalalithaa on December 5, 2016, and Archana is now a possible contender for the post of DGP.

While Rajendran (1984 batch) is set to retire on June 30, Archana, an IPS officer of the 1980 batch, is scheduled to retire in October. K Radhakrishnan (1983 batch), K P Mahendran (1984 batch), S George (1984-batch) and Rajendran (1984 batch) are the other DGP-rank IPS officers in the state apart from Archana.There was a strong rumour that Rajendran, a native of Thiruvannamalai, could get an extension as state police chief as the government led by Edappadi K Palaniswami was said to be comfortable with his functioning. The other eligible IPS officers in the rank of DGP have also tried through various power centres to get the post in the state. Some officers through the state power centres, while others through the power centres in the central government.But, the meeting between Archana, the senior most IPS officer in the state and currently director general of the Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB), and chief minister Palaniswami in Delhi seems to have changed things. The meeting happened when Palaniswami visited Dehi on June 23 for the presidential election nomination filed by NDA candidate Ram Nath Kovind After Archana left the state on central deputation in 2015, the state government led by J Jayalalithaa wrote to the Centre seeking her return. At the time, Archana was a strong contender for the post of director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
