Man, 55, dies as scooter strikes speed-breaker

CHENNAI: A 55-year-old man died and his friend, riding pillion, had a narrow escape when their scooter smashed into a speed-breaker and plunged into a 30ft deep pit in Aranvayakuppam, Tiruvallur district, on Monday evening.Police identified the rider as Ambedkar and his friend as Bangarusamy, 55.Police said the two men had gone to Tiruvallur on a scooter and were returning home in the evening when the accident took place."Ambedkar did not see the speed-breaker ahead and hit it without reducing speed of the scooter," a police officer said. Monday evening's accident was the latest in a string of crashes involving speed-breakers.On March 18, racer Ashwin Sundar and his wife Nivedhitha were charred to death when their BMW rammed a tree after hitting a speed-breaker on Santhome High Road. Police said Sundar and his wife were trapped in the burning car because the doors would not open with the vehicle stuck between the tree and a wall. Road transport ministry data shows speedbreakers cause 30 crashes and nine fatalities each day.They clamied 3,409 livesa cross the country in 2015.Many speed-breakers are dangerous because they are made in an unscientific manner, experts say.
