New road does not serve its purpose

It was expected to make journey smoother for motorists, on Pillar Koil Street, Bazaar Road and First Main Road in Nesapakkam. Further, the Anna Main Road will be widened at least near the point where it intersects with Link Road to ease traffic congestion there. The existing sodium-vapour lamps don’t emit enough light and motorists find it difficult to negotiate the intersection of Anna Main Road and Link Road. It is two weeks since the LED high-mast lamps were installed at the intersection of Anna Main Road and Link Road, but they are yet to glow. The fact that Link Road lacks reflectors and speed breakers is also contributing to the risk factor.

It is less than a month since the new Link Road was opened for traffic. It was expected to make journey smoother for motorists, on Pillar Koil Street, Bazaar Road and First Main Road in Nesapakkam. However, contrary to expectations, the road has made it riskier for motorists. The Link Road, which connects Ramapuram with K.K. Nagar via Anna Main Road in Nesapakkam, is poorly-lit. It is two weeks since the LED high-mast lamps were installed at the intersection of Anna Main Road and Link Road, but they are yet to glow. The existing sodium-vapour lamps don’t emit enough light and motorists find it difficult to negotiate the intersection of Anna Main Road and Link Road. The fact that Link Road lacks reflectors and speed breakers is also contributing to the risk factor. “ Despite the installation of new LED high-mast lamps, the intersection continues to be poorly-lit. And then, there is an additional problem. The stretch near the intersection towards Ramapuram is also not free of unauthorised parking,” says K. Vaidiyanathan, a motorist from K.K. Nagar. Residents have also pointed out that at night, unauthorised bike racing takes place on Link Road. Even before the Link Road was opened for traffic, the Greater Chennai Corporation constructed a small roundtana at the intersection as it is a narrow bend that connects Nesapakkam with Anna Main Road via First Main Road in Nesapakkam. The new stretch, laid at a cost of Rs. 5 crore, is 18 metres wide. It is better suited for the plying of buses than the narrow Bazaar Road, which has a few dangerous curves and lacks a footpath and street lamps. Corporation officials say steps have been taken to operate the new high-mast lamps. Further, the Anna Main Road will be widened at least near the point where it intersects with Link Road to ease traffic congestion there. Steps will also be taken to check unauthorised parking, officials of the civic body said.
