“We will take necessary steps to stop illegal discharge of sewage water into the park,” said a Corporation official. Visitors learnt about it as stagnant sewage water along the walkers’ pathway. A foul smell emanates from the stagnant water that has been discharged from these houses. In fact, Zone – 7 of Greater Chennai Corporation developed the park as a ‘Model Park’ last year. For a week now, residents of houses along the compound wall of Mangal Eri park, also known as Arignar Anna Park, on Vellar Street in Mogappair West, are allegedly discharging sewage and grey water into the gardening area of the park.

more-in For a week now, residents of houses along the compound wall of Mangal Eri park, also known as Arignar Anna Park, on Vellar Street in Mogappair West, are allegedly discharging sewage and grey water into the gardening area of the park. A hole has been made in the compound wall to carry out this illegal activity. Dry branches of a coconut tree have been kept around the hole to hide it from view. Visitors have been complaining about this practice to the officials of the Zone – 7 (Ambattur) of Greater Chennai Corporation. A foul smell emanates from the stagnant water that has been discharged from these houses. The sewage also flows along the walkers’ pathway. As there is think greenery, the sewage in the gardening area is not visible from a distance. Visitors learnt about it as stagnant sewage water along the walkers’ pathway. The walkers’ pathway is 520 metres long and 4.5 feet wide. “Due to the foul smell, we are unable to walk on the tiled footpath at the park. We have complained about this to Corporation officials, but they remain mute spectators,” says V. Karthik, a resident of Mogappair. Every day, on an average, more than 2,000 people, mainly walkers from Mogappair West, Reddipalayam Nagar, Mogappair East, J.J. Nagar, Nolambur, Maduravoyal, Collector Nagar and Tirumangalam, visit the park. Visitors complain of a profuse growth of weeds in the space between the compound wall and the walkers’ pathway. Many visitors have spotted snakes in this space. Unfortunately, concrete benches, which is part of the seating arrangement at the park, have been constructed over these overgrown weeds. A pond, located at the centre of the park, is in a pathetic condition. Over 50 feet deep, the pond was one of the main attractions at the park. Visitors were drawn to it for the ducks swimming around in it. Now, the pond is a cesspool with stagnant water and overgrown weeds. In fact, Zone – 7 of Greater Chennai Corporation developed the park as a ‘Model Park’ last year. A plan to further improve the park was dropped by the Corporation as residents and visitors objected that going ahead with it would be a case of replacing something that is already good. For example, the walkers’ pathway was already in a good condition. The Corporation dropped not only the plan, but also regular maintenance of the park. “We will take necessary steps to stop illegal discharge of sewage water into the park,” said a Corporation official.
