The TNHB layout is one of the biggest residential localities comprising 8,000 houses and with over 30,000 residents in Avadi. A few months ago, the Avadi Municipality planned to construct a garbage segregation unit on a vacant land in Vivekananda Nagar of the TNHB layout. The residents complain that the locality was already prone to flooding during the rains and that they have been facing several health hazards due to poor garbage collection. If the garbage segregation unit comes up in the residential locality, it would only add to the health hazards, the residents claimed. N. Manoharan, a resident, rued that the proposal to construct the garbage segregation unit in the residential locality was taken up when several localities had sternly opposed the construction during the proposal stage itself. In this case, the foundation work has already started adjacent to the overhead water tank of the Avadi Municipality, he pointed out. The residents also said that an underground well was located near the proposed unit and might be affected. They also alleged that already there was a government school nearby and the unit would also be close to the Amma marriage hall for which land had been allotted. Despite sending petitions to the Tiruvallur Collector and Avadi MLA and Minister MaFoi K. Pandiarajan, no steps have been taken to stop the work on the garbage unit, the residents charge.
