Vedhan more-in Frustrated over having to take a battered stretch of Poonamallee Bypass Road near Senneerkuppam junction on a daily basis, residents and Public Environment and Awareness Society members have lodged a complaint with the police. Residents complained that the junction near the RTO office, Poonamallee, had been damaged and filled with potholes. The junction of Poonamallee Bypass Road and Avadi Main Road remained in poor shape for nearly a year now and motorists often faced the risk of accidents or had to deal with inching traffic due to the damaged stretch. P. Anandan, a resident of Avadi, said besides the vehicles proceeding to Kancheepuram and Bengaluru, motorists used the junction to reach Avadi, Karayanchavadi and Poonamallee. The road had been damaged for a distance of two km upto Saveetha Dental College. The service lanes too were damaged. “It is difficult to cross the stretch after rains as the road is covered under sheets of water. Many two-wheeler riders have been injured in the past few weeks,” he said. Little maintenance Though several representations were made, steps had not been taken to repair the road. S.Yuvaraj, president of Public Environment and Awareness Society, said the project to upgrade the road into a six-lane facillity between Vanagaram and Walajah was yet to take off. About ?30 lakh was collected as toll charges at Sriperumbudur toll gate daily. But the stretch continued to be poorly maintained for several years now. “We have lodged complaint against the National Highways Authority of India that maintains the Poonamallee Bypass Road. We are waiting for the police intervention and action to at least temporarily fix the road during this monsoon,” he said. Residents plan to pool funds and take up work to relay the damaged portions to ensure safety of the motorists if the stretch continues to be neglected.
