Students at the College Bazaar organised by Mahalir Thittam at Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology in Coimbatore. more-in Mahalir Thittam, a socio-economic empowerment programme for women implemented by the Tamil Nadu Corporation for Development of Women Limited (TNCDW), is reaching out to colleges through ‘College Bazaars’ to exhibit and sell products manufactured by Women Self Help Groups (SHGs) in the district. It is also taking steps to revive five kiosks set up for promoting SHG products across Coimbatore. Mahalir Thittam has so far organised five ‘College Bazaars’ and the 6th ‘College Bazaar’ was conducted at Sri Krishna College of Engineering and Technology here recently. Three more ‘College Bazaars’ will be conducted this academic year at Kalaimagal College of Arts and Science, Kalaimagal College of Engineering, and Sri Ramakrishna College for Women. Products manufactured by SHGs such as handmade jewellery, snacks, value-added embroidery textiles, toys were exhibited and received good response from the students. “The TNCDW is taking pro-active steps to revive five dormant kiosks set up some time ago at five locations in Coimbatore,” said K. Selvarasu, Project Officer, TNCDW, and Tamil Nadu Rural Livelihood Mission. Mr. Selvarasu told The Hindu that applications have been invited from Panchayat Level Federations (PLFs), SHGs and NGOs to run the kiosks at a nominal rate. The temporary kiosks to be revived are located at Coimbatore Collectorate, foothills of Marudhamalai temple, Karamadai bus station, opposite Pollachi Bus Stand and Sulur Bus station.
