Students learn about heritage at NMR museum

Coimbatore: More than hundreds students, along with senior citizens , visited the NMR Museum in Mettupalayam on the occasion of World Heritage Day on Wednesday, in an event organised by the Southern Railway. Addressing the gathering, he said that they have been demanding high-end equipment to enhance the production at the workshop. “We have been working on to sort out the limitations in the workshop, so that the target could be achieved in the forthcoming year,” he added. It has produced only 4,425 point machines, while the target was 5,600, he said. “Steps were being taken to provide isolation transformer, emergency cycling home, LED signal and terminal board to the workshop at the earliest,” he said.While requesting the officials to achieve more than the target production, Elavarasan pointed out that the workshop has achieved only Rs 72 crore, while the production target was Rs 103 crore.

The day is celebrated to enhance awareness about the importance of cultural heritage of mankind and to increase the efforts to protect and conserve heritage.As the theme for the year was Heritage for Generations, as defined by UNESCO, the department has taken both students and senior citizens in and around Mettupalayam to visit the museum.In order to educate them, the students were shown video clips about the museum and its heritage value, apart from arranging a direct discussion on the topic, importance and value of heritage, with the senior citizens to provide them the knowledge of their generation.Station director of Coimbatore P Satheesh Saravanan and assistant divisional mechanical engineer Deeksha Choudry were present on behalf of the Salem division.Meanwhile, the signal and telecommunication workshop of the Southern Railway organised its 63rd Railway Week celebration at the Railway Community Centre in Podanur, in which principal chief signal and telecommunication engineer P Elavarasan, attended.
