Oil firms to observe ‘Ujjwala Diwas’

Out of the total number of 1,041 households in the two villages, 920 have LPG connections and the rest would be given LPG connections on April 20. Addressing reporters, S. Pratap, District Nodal Officer, IOC, told reporters that Kanuvakkarai in Coimbatore North Taluk and Thoppampatti in Pollachi Taluk in the district would be declared 100 % Ujjwala villages. The three public sector petroleum companies – Indian Oil Corporation, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum – will observe Ujjwala Diwas as part of the ‘Gram Swaraj Abhiyan’ as per the directions of the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas on April 20 at 70 places across district. The ministry intends to promote amongst the rural consumers on safe and sustained use of LPG through peer group interactions. LPG distributors of the three petroleum companies would take necessary steps to give at least 100 new connections under the Ujjwala scheme to those categorised under BPL families.

The interactions will be based on the themes of health, safety, environment, women empowerment etc. LPG distributors of the three petroleum companies would take necessary steps to give at least 100 new connections under the Ujjwala scheme to those categorised under BPL families. Priority would be given to SC, ST, forest dwellers, and tribal people. If the beneficiaries are sound enough to buy stove, the corporations would extend loan and and it would be recoverable within six months, the official added.
