Coimbatore: Rural police on Wednesday arrested BJP’s Madukkarai area youth wing secretary R Sureshkumar for creating enmity between the residents of Keel Chithirai Chavadi, Thondamuthur and Perur. M Sivakumar, an assistant engineer with the irrigation department in Noyyal west division of the public works department ( PWD), had lodged a complaint against Sureshkumar. “I had inspected Chithirai Chavadi check dam’s sluice gates on June 15 and had found them working perfectly. Meanwhile, BJP functionary Sureshkumar spread rumours using his Facebook and WhatsApp accounts that residents of Thondamuthur and Perur won’t get water from Noyyal river because Keel Chithirai Chavadi residents have blocked water in the check dam. The rumour went viral on social media and people from Thondamuthur and Perur approached me demanding action against Keel Chithirai Chavadi villagers. I told them that it is just a rumour and decided to take action against the person who spread it,” Sivakumar’s complaint said.Thondamuthur police registered a case against Sureshkumar, a resident of Gandhi Nagar in Madukkarai and booked him under section 153, 153 (A) and 505 of the Indian Penal Code. He was arrested and remanded in judicial custody and lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison.Meanwhile, BJP district president CR Nandakumar said that Sureshkumar had posted a message about encroachments in Noyyal river and had requested authorities to remove them. “But AIADMK leaders targeted him and instigated the PWD official to lodge a complaint against him. We will fight against AIADMK if they are functioning against the welfare of general public,” Nandakumar said.
