7,370 electronic voting machines arrive in city from Bengaluru

Coimbatore: The district on Thursday received its share of 7 ,370 electronic voting machines (EVMs) from the election commission. “For safety purpose, 20% machines were reserved,” the official added.Earlier, EVMs in the district were sent to poll-bound Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka. Meant for Coimbatore and Pollachi constituencies, the EVMs arrived in the city straight from the private manufacturing company in Bengaluru.The EVMs were then locked inside a strong room at the office of deputy director of health service at Race Course in the presence of district collector T N Hariharan and representatives of political parties. The strong room will be protected by police officials round the clock.“The EVMs will remain in the district until further notice,” said a senior district administration official.Based on the voter population, the election department has sanctioned the required number of ballet units, control units and voter-verifiable paper audit trail (VVpat) machines to the district, the official said.Pointing out that the election commission had allotted 7,370 ballet units and 4,000 each control units and VVpat machines to the district, the official said the district was yet to receive the allotted control units and VVpat machines.
