Coimbatore: The city corporation is all set to commence works on the restoration and rejuvenation of three lakes and model roads, which were proposed more than a year ago under the smart city mission, at the earliest.Corporation officials said the multi-crore projects would commence from July. “Tenders were floated in May and the work order will be issued within a few weeks,” said a senior corporation official, who didn’t want to be named. All the four projects are expected to be completed in 18 months from the date of commencement.In the first phase of lake restoration project, the civic body would develop the Ukkadam periyakulam at a cost of Rs 39.74 crore, build a walkers’ plaza along the Valankulam lake at a cost of Rs 24.31 crore and give facelift to the portion of Valankulam lake under the flyover at a cost of Rs 23.83.The civic body has also plans to set up a non-motorised corridor at Valankulam tank on Trichy Road and waterfront urban spaces at Selvachinthamani tank and Ukkadam periyakulum.The civic body would also simultaneously implement the model roads project on DB Road, TV Samy Road and Race Course Road at a cost of Rs 24.71 crore.“Tender was floated after the final design was approved by the civic body. Presently, the technical evaluation of the project is going on,” the official said, adding, “The price bids for the projects will be opened shortly to finalise the contractor.” A separate project management consultant would be appointed to monitor the progress and the quality of the work, the official added.Under the model roads project, the selected roads would be redesigned around the theme Thirukkural, by replacing the advertisement boards with the those featuring Thirukkural couplets. Also, storm water drain structures would be redesigned. Other amenities include a uniform carriage way, shelters for commuters and parking space. “The entire road will be designed in such a way to enable harvesting of rainwater,” said another corporation official.In the second phase of lake rejuvenation project, Narasampathy, Krishnampathy, Selvampathy and Kumarasamy lakes would be developed. Singanallur lake would be developed in the third phase.
