COIMBATORE: A 10-member group from the city was part of the team that attempted a Guinness world record by visiting seven UNESCO sites in the country within 12 hours, using public transport. They said the move was meant to prove that the country was a safe place for travel and its public transport was also reliable. The sites they visited were in Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan. The 10 were part of a 21-member team that had been planning this expedition for a year. They, however, couldn’t wait to execute their plan when a Swiss couple was attacked at Fatehpur Sikri last year. They decided to go on their dream trip, that too using public transport.Pointing out that after the incident at Fatehpur Sikhri, the national and international media were tarnishing the image of the national capital, N Suresh Kumar, founder and CEO of Triumph Expeditions, said, “Various other unfortunate events also happened at that time. So, we wanted to prove that India is safe and so is its public transport system.”The team started their trip at 5.20am on Sunday (July 8) from Taj Mahal and covered Agra Fort , Fatehpur Sikri, Bharatpur National Park in Rajasthan, Humayun’s tomb, Red Fort and Qutub Minar . “We finished the trip within 11 hours, 35 minutes and 18 seconds, inclusive of time spent to get witness signatures,” Kumar said. The team’s biggest challenge was the humid climate that made them dehydrated. They also ended up taking an unplanned break for 15 minutes at Red Fort. Yet, they managed to complete the trip on time. “Children and women in the team enjoyed the trip. The children saw some rare birds at the national park and the women were happy when people in buses often got up to offer them and the children a seat,” said one of the crew members. The women also found all the restrooms in public places to be clean and tidy.
