223 TN schools to get Atal tinkering labs this year

Coimbatore: If everything goes well, more than 200 schools in the state would soon get Atal tinkering labs to provide students hands-on training in subjects such as electronics, robotics and 3D printing.Unveiling the plans to set up such labs in 3,000 schools across the country within March 2019, R Ramanan, mission director, Atal Innovation Mission under Niti Aayog, said “We are working to open the labs at the earliest, say in another four to six months. These incharges would not only be trained in technology, but also in design thinking and soft skills. The labs would also have two to four mentors each. There are around 2,500 registered mentors in Atal labs across the country.Atal Incubation Centres were also being set up in educational institutions and industries across the country under Atal Innovation Mission, Ramanan said. “The 19 incubators, which are already functional, have created more than 500 startups so far. These startups are expected to employ around 12,500 people within the next two to four years. We also expect another 4,000 to 5,000 startups to be created in the next five years.” He said it was with a goal to produce job creators that they were promoting incubation centres.Ramanan said they were looking to partner with small industries and to have them respond to Atal India Challenges. “We have been working on launching a plan called small business innovation and research to work with micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs). This will be launched within this year,” he said.The body has also been working with industry bodies like Codissia in the city for infusing innovation in MSMEs.
