The Tirupur Exporters’ Association has welcomed the hike in basic customs duty for 23 knitted garment items announced by the Union Government. The hike in customs duty will protect the domestic garment industry, he said. The association had made several representations to the Ministry of Textiles seeking higher customs duty on ready-made garments. In 2017-18, import of ready-made garments went up to ?4,983 crore from ?3,994 crore the previous year. Association president Raja M. Shanmugham has said in a press release that the government has increased the basic customs duty from 10 % to 20 % for one knitted fabric variety too.
