COIMBATORE: A three-member gang attacked a police inspector and a head constable attached to the Q branch inside the subway connecting the the New Bus Stand and Old Bus Stand at Pollachi on Thursday evening.The injured cops were identified as Chelladurai, Q branch inspector from Erode and Mohanasundaram, Q branch head constable from Coimbatore. “Chelladurai, who was holding additional charge of Coimbatore district, had visited Pollachi to meet assistant public prosecutor Malarkodi. After discussing about a Maoist case, he had lunch in company of Q branch sub-inspector Ruban, head constables Mohanasundaram and Palaniraj at a hotel. After the lunch, the cops were on the way to the Old Bus Stand through the subway when they found the three-member gang consuming liquor and disturbing people,” a police officers said.Chelladurai and team confronted the gang members and told them that they were police officers in plain clothes. “When the cops attempted to nab the trio, they attacked the officers using knives. Chelladurai and Mohanasundaram suffered minor injuries on neck and right hand. While the other officers managed to nab two members of the gang, one man managed to flee. They were handed over to Pollachi East police,” the officer told TOI.The gang members were identified as V Premkumar of New Alagappa Layout at Pollachi and C Vijay from the Sri Lankan refugee camp at Pooluvapatti. “Premkumar is an ex-convict. He is facing a murder case in Pollachi. Vijay is facing six cases in Alandurai and a double murder case at Selvapuram,” the officer added.Chelladurai and Mohanasundaram were treated as outpatients at the Pollachi Government Hospital.Pollachi West police have registered a case. Further investigation is on.
