Stone hits CM’s car, probe on

Coimbatore: Senior police officers are investigating an incident in which a stone hit chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami’s car while he was travelling from Coimbatore to Salem on Wednesday night, a few independent sources told TOI. Top officials from west zone held a meeting with the Tirupur district police officers on Wednesday night. It is not the case of a person pelting the CM’s car with a stone.Police presence along the Salem-Coimbatore stretch was strengthened as the chief minister travelled back on the route to take a flight to Chennai from Coimbatore airport on Thursday night, as scheduled. When the convoy entered Tirupur district, a stone hit the CM’s car, said the sources who travelled in the convoy.The convoy was stopped immediately, and the chief minister was advised to travel in another car for security reasons. However, the police officers declined to make an official statement.On Wednesday night, the chief minister arrived at the Coimbatore International Airport from Chennai as part of his travel plans to Salem to open the sluice gates of Mettur dam the next day.After a brief interaction with reporters, his convoy hit the road to Salem.

A police team began inquiries. Top officials from west zone held a meeting with the Tirupur district police officers on Wednesday night. Police would investigate whether the stone was aimed at the CM’s convoy and who had thrown it, said the sources.Confirming the incident, a senior police officer told TOI that a small stone rolled over from the tyre due to the speed and hit the front windshield of the CM’s car. It is not the case of a person pelting the CM’s car with a stone.Police presence along the Salem-Coimbatore stretch was strengthened as the chief minister travelled back on the route to take a flight to Chennai from Coimbatore airport on Thursday night, as scheduled.
