Temple land case: HR&CE notices to five trustees

Tirupur: The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR & CE) department has issued show-cause notices to five trustees of Karunalayaswami mutt for misusing around 5 acres belonging to Avinashi Lingeshwarar temple. A portion of the disputed land was rented out to a private primary school for more than 30 years. The trustees should have utilized the lands for growing flowers and provide the garlands to all the deities of Avinashi Lingeshwarar temple and required things during Vasantha Utsav held during Tamil month Vaigasi (April-May), throughout their lifetime. The trustees were asked to give a reply within 15 days, the official added. It was confirmed by the department when the authorities inspected the lands as per directions given by the Madras high court.

But the trustees have failed to utilize the revenue generated out of the land for the maintenance of the temple.As per a title deed in 1928, 2.5 acres at Avinashi and 2.71 acres at Velayudhampalayam were gifted to ancestors of V Karunalayaswami of Pukoliyur, A Ramalingam of Majra Podipalayam, Kulandaisamy of Ettimadai in Coimbatore, P Rathinasamy and R Arumugam, both from Pollachi. The trustees should have utilized the lands for growing flowers and provide the garlands to all the deities of Avinashi Lingeshwarar temple and required things during Vasantha Utsav held during Tamil month Vaigasi (April-May), throughout their lifetime. And they also should provide foods to saints who visit the temple, said the department official.But for many years, the trustees have violated the will and they were utilizing the revenue generated out of the lands for their own use. It was confirmed by the department when the authorities inspected the lands as per directions given by the Madras high court. So, the department decided to issue show-cause notice to them. The trustees were asked to give a reply within 15 days, the official added.
