Minister S P Velumani arrives two hours late, delays CRPF training for Tamil Nadu police

COIMBATORE: The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), which is known for being punctual, on Saturday delayed a disaster management programme by two hours. By that time, CRPF police personnel, who were waiting for the minister, had started to sleep.Later, the CRPF personnel conducted the mock drills to rescue the people during disasters. As always, CRPF personnel, about 200 of them, turned up at the venue well in advance.Meanwhile, Coimbatore range deputy inspector general of police G Karthikeyan and more than 70 police personnel also arrived at the venue. The minister, however, kept them waiting for at least two hours. When asked about the delay, Prabu, inspector of police, CRPF, told reporters that they used to follow the timing, but the minister was late to arrive.According to police and district administration sources, Velumani hardly sticks to any programme schedule.

Municipal administration minister S P Velumani, who was to witness the demonstration and interact with trainees, was late to arrive.The venue was the Central Training College, CRPF, Kurudampalayam, where Tamil Nadu state police personnel were getting six week’s basic training in areas of disaster management; chemical, biological, radiological and nuclear (CBRN) emergencies; medical first responder; and collapsed structure search.The college had invited Velumani and state police officials to witness the demonstration on disaster management on Saturday and the programme was scheduled to begin at 11.30am. As always, CRPF personnel, about 200 of them, turned up at the venue well in advance.Meanwhile, Coimbatore range deputy inspector general of police G Karthikeyan and more than 70 police personnel also arrived at the venue. The minister, however, kept them waiting for at least two hours. And when Velumani finally arrived at the venue at 1pm, he took his sweet time to go around the college premises, visiting a temple located inside it and another place where CRPF officials had put on display advanced weapons.Around 1.30pm, Velumani arrived at the demonstration venue. By that time, CRPF police personnel, who were waiting for the minister, had started to sleep.Later, the CRPF personnel conducted the mock drills to rescue the people during disasters. When asked about the delay, Prabu, inspector of police, CRPF, told reporters that they used to follow the timing, but the minister was late to arrive.According to police and district administration sources, Velumani hardly sticks to any programme schedule. “He often shows up after a minimum of two hours’ delay.”It is to be noted that the minister hadn’t showed up for flagging off new buses from a bus stand at Ukkadam even two hours after the scheduled time at 10am recently.TOI made several attempts to reach the minister, but he was unreachable.
