Flood fear forces residents along River Bhavani move to safe locations

Officials of the Public Works Department, using earthmovers, removed water hyacinth from the River Bhavani to ensure water flow is smooth. With River Bhavani converging with River Cauvery at Kooduthurai, the water flow in River Cauvery stood at 2.35 lakh cusecs in the evening causing more flooding at Bhavani and Kodumudi areas. Since more water discharge from Mettur Dam is likely, vulnerable areas were identified and more people were moved to safer locations, she added. With increase in discharge at Bhavani Sagar dam from 50,000 cusecs to 70,000 cusecs into River Bhavani on Tuesday evening, more houses and agricultural lands located along the river on both the sides got submerged causing panic among the people. While most of them were moved to flood relief camps, a few families preferred to join their relatives.

The increase in discharge led to more flooding at Arasur, Doddampalayam, Alathukombai, Nanjai Uthukuli and few other villages in Sathyamangalam taluk as people were evacuated and moved to safe locations. While most of them were moved to flood relief camps, a few families preferred to join their relatives. Farmers said that more flood water kept entering their farm land through out the day as they worry that their standing crops would get damaged soon. District Revenue Officer S. Kavitha told The Hindu that food and drinking water were distributed to affected people in the district while health teams were also in place to monitor their conditions. Since more water discharge from Mettur Dam is likely, vulnerable areas were identified and more people were moved to safer locations, she added. Officials fear that if additional 2.10 lakh cusecs is discharged from Mettur dam and more water is discharged from Bhavani Sagar dam, the flow in the River Cauvery could be over four lakh cusecs causing more flooding and affecting the people. District Monitoring Officer T. Udhayachandran along with Collector S. Prabhakar inspected the flood-hit areas in the district.
