High alert in Salem, Namakkal districts

In Namakkal district, many low lying areas in Kumarapalayam, Pallipalayam, Jedarpalayam and Batlur near Tiruchengode were inundated. The check dam at Jedarpalayam in Namakkal district continues to surplus. With the Central Water Commission issuing the fourth flood warning since the Mettur Dam reached the full reservoir level (FRL) about a week ago, the official machinery has intensified patrolling of the low-lying areas in Salem and Namakkal districts. Balachandran, Principal Secretary, Commercial Taxes and Registration Department, and monitoring officer for Namakkal district, visited the inundated areas in Pallipalayam and Kumarapalayam towns and reviewed the precautionary measures. Salem Collector Rohini R. Bhajibhakare said the sluices of the Sekkanur barrage were safe and no damage was reported.

A CWC statement said discharge from the Kabini and Krishnaraja Sagar reservoirs in Karnataka was expected to cross more than two lakh cusecs, leading to further spate in River Cauvery. The entire inflow of about 1.65 lakh cusecs (cubic feet per second) into Mettur Dam recorded on Thursday evening was discharged into River Cauvery through the thermal plant sluices and 16-vent surplus weir sluices. This was the maximum inflow recorded this year. Twenty-four personnel of the disaster response team of the State police have been posted in the low-lying areas surrounding the Stanley Reservoir at Mettur and at Poolampatti to ensure the safety of the people. In Namakkal district, many low lying areas in Kumarapalayam, Pallipalayam, Jedarpalayam and Batlur near Tiruchengode were inundated. As many as 1,505 people, including children, belonging to 483 families were shifted to 10 relief camps in these towns. People were shifted from flood-prone areas of Janatha Nagar, Sathya Nagar, Paavai Street, Nattagoundanpudur, Kanthapettai Agraharam, Avarankadu in Pallipalayam Town, Indira Nagar, Kalaimagal Street in Kumarapalayam Town, Solasiramani and Arasampalayam in Jedarpalayam. The Salem district administration has kept ready 16 camps -- 10 in Mettur and three each in Edapadi and Sankagiri. The check dam at Jedarpalayam in Namakkal district continues to surplus. The inundation of a part of the Mettur – Edappadi Road has forced traffic diversion. Ka. Balachandran, Principal Secretary, Commercial Taxes and Registration Department, and monitoring officer for Namakkal district, visited the inundated areas in Pallipalayam and Kumarapalayam towns and reviewed the precautionary measures. He also visited a few relief centres and enquired about the facilities with the people, and checked the availability of medicines. District Revenue Officer K. Palaniswami accompanied him. Namakkal Collector M. Asia Mariam inspected the banks of the river at Mohanur and nearby areas. Salem Collector Rohini R. Bhajibhakare said the sluices of the Sekkanur barrage were safe and no damage was reported. Public Works Department officials inspected the sluices and confirmed they were in good condition, she said.
