Four-year-old boy ‘accidently’ falls into raging Cauvery, dies

Namakkal: A day after he celebrated his fourth birthday, an LKG student died after he accidently fell into the Cauvery near Mohanur here on Tuesday. “After parking the car on Vangal-Mohanur state highway bridge, Babu started showing the river to his son. His body is yet to be retrieved.Initially, it was said the boy fell into the river when his father attempted to take a selfie with his son in one hand and mobile phone in another (hand). The boy accidently fell into the river from the bridge and he was washed away,” R Arularasu, Namakkal district superintendent of police (SP) told TOI.When alerted, the Mohanur police reached the spot and informed the fire and rescue services personnel in Namakkal town for assistance. Together, they started searching for the body.Meanwhile, some said the boy had fallen into the river when his father attempted to take selfie by holding him in his left hand and operating the mobile phone using the right hand.However, the SP said they were just rumours.

However, police dismissed it as just rumours.The deceased was identified as B Dhanvanth, son of couple S Babu and Sobha, from LGB Nagar at Karur.On Monday, Babu and Sobha had celebrated their son’s birthday and taken him to Mohanur to see the Cauvery, which was flowing with more than one lakh cubic feet per second (cusecs) water.On Tuesday morning, the boy expressed the wish to see the Cauvery again when Babu was on his way to drop him at his school at Karur around 9.30am.Babu took the boy to Mohanur in his car as he didn’t want to disappoint his son. “After parking the car on Vangal-Mohanur state highway bridge, Babu started showing the river to his son. The boy accidently fell into the river from the bridge and he was washed away,” R Arularasu, Namakkal district superintendent of police (SP) told TOI.When alerted, the Mohanur police reached the spot and informed the fire and rescue services personnel in Namakkal town for assistance. Together, they started searching for the body.Meanwhile, some said the boy had fallen into the river when his father attempted to take selfie by holding him in his left hand and operating the mobile phone using the right hand.However, the SP said they were just rumours. “We have thoroughly checked his mobile phone and there are no selfie images in it.”The Mohanur police have registered a case under section 174 (unnatural death) of CrPC.When TOI contacted fire and rescue services personnel before going to press, they said search was still on for the body.
