Puram in Coimbatore. | Photo Credit: M_PERIASAMY more-in Coimbatore Corporation has renewed attempts to rebuild the hockey turf that it had left abandoned two years ago. On Monday, the Corporation opened tenders it had floated a couple of weeks ago to appoint a consultant, who would prepare a detailed project report for rebuilding the turf and a stadium with gallery at the R.S. Puram Boys’ School. Sources in the Corporation said that the officials in-charge of finalising the tender would have to go through the bids and then award the tender to the lowest bidder. And thereafter, the successful consultant would prepare the report. Based on the report, the Corporation would float tender again to build a hockey stadium on the school ground with funds under Smart Cities. At present, the school ground has a raised platform with a layer of damaged asphalt as evidence of the Corporation’s botched up attempt at building a stadium. The Corporation had proposed laying a synthetic turf at ? 75 lakh and construction of gallery and other facilities for around ? 4 crore. A year ago, the Corporation began laying a rubber-resin surface on top the asphalt to provide cushion. On top of the rubber-resin surface, it was to have spread the synthetic turf. But things did not go as planned and the Corporation had to halt work. And, when it stopped work, it brought to a halt a process that began a year earlier under the then Mayor P. Rajkumar, who kept pushing for a hockey turf of international standards to put Coimbatore on the national and international hockey map. Sources in a hockey association said it would have been a dream come true if the Corporation would have completed the project, for the stadium would have benefited the hockey fraternity in not only Coimbatore but also the neighbouring districts. The officials said that the work had now begun again and would continue as the civic body was keen on having the hockey stadium. And, funds would not be a problem as it would use the Smart Cities fund.
