Singanallur folk fear for safety as burglars strike at house, shop in a day

Since both the incidents took place in the same locality on the same day, police suspect the involvement of same people in both the cases. “He locked the shop around 10.30pm on Friday and went home.” When he returned on Saturday morning, he found some miscreants had entered the shop through roof and decamped with Rs 8,000 in cash and readymade garments worth Rs 21,000.

COIMBATORE: Fear has gripped the residents of Singanallur after burglar(s) struck at a house and a garment shop in the area in the early hours of Saturday.In the first incident, unidentified person(s) broke into the house of an elderly man and made away with gold ornaments worth more than Rs 5 lakh.According to police, the burglary took place when S Eswaran, 60, a retired bank official, was away in Chennai along with his family members to visit his daughter. “He had gone to Chennai on Friday.”On Saturday morning, his neighbours found front door of his house was broken open and alerted Eswaran. He returned home in the evening and found gold ornaments weighing 50 sovereigns were missing from a cupboard. However, cash and other valuables, were untouched.Eswaran subsequently lodged a case with the Singanallur police, who have launched a probe into the case.In another incident, burglar(s) broke into a garment shop and looted cash and goods worth about 29,000 on the early hours of Saturday.The shop, police said, belonged to A Mohammed Fazil, 25. “He locked the shop around 10.30pm on Friday and went home.” When he returned on Saturday morning, he found some miscreants had entered the shop through roof and decamped with Rs 8,000 in cash and readymade garments worth Rs 21,000. “Burglar(s) broke open the roof to enter the shop.”Fazil has also lodged a complaint with the Singanallur police. Since both the incidents took place in the same locality on the same day, police suspect the involvement of same people in both the cases. “The crimes seem to be committed by someone who is familiar to the locality and residents, as other things in the buildings weren’t disturbed while searching for valuables,” an investigation officer said.The Singanallur police have registered two separate cases under Section 420 (theft) of the Indian Penal Code and started investigation. “Finger print experts and the dog squad were pressed into service. We have also collected CCTV footage from nearby areas.”
