Man held for desecration of Periyar statue near Tirupur

"Police said Naveen, an MBA degree holder, had admitted to desecrating the statue as he didn’t like Periyar who was an atheist. TIRUPUR: A 28-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly desecrating a statue of Dravidar Kazhagam founder Periyar E V Ramasamy at Dharapuram in Tirupur district of Tamil Nadu on Monday.The accused has been identified as K Naveen Kumar of Thalavaipattinam.Police said, "A CCTV footage showed the man reaching the Periyar Thidal Park around 3am on Monday. He entered the park and damaged the bronze statue with a stone before spitting on it. He then placed a pair of slippers and a brick on the statue.
