Coimbatore govt arts college students stage protest seeking better facilities at hostel

COIMBATORE: More than 100 students of the Government Arts College in Coimbatore, who stay in the college hostel at Race Course, on Monday staged a protest in front of the college demanding better facilities at the hostel.Students, who gathered to protest in front of the college, said toilets at the hostel were not cleaned properly. People in-charge of the hostel said they got the toilets and bathrooms cleaned regularly.When contacted, principal of the college K Chitra said the students had represented issues regarding the hostel infrastructure to her. The college management has agreed to take care of issues which can be done by the college, such as placing television, water dispensers and maintaining the ground and using it for sports activities,” she said. She said the public works department was in charge of the hostel infrastructure.“PWD officials said they had floated a tender and would start work in repairing damaged portions of the hostel on Wednesday.

They also said there weren’t enough toilets for the number of students staying in the hostel.They said students who had morning shift classes found it difficult to get ready early because of this.“The doors and windows of several rooms in the hostel are damaged,” said a protester.The students said breakfast timing at the hostel were inconvenient for them. “Breakfast is from 7.30am to 9.00am. People who have classes in morning shift find it difficult to have breakfast within one and a half hours,” said a student.When TOI visited the hostel, the main hostel block had 18 toilets and bathrooms and an additional 12 toilets and in a separate block. People in-charge of the hostel said they got the toilets and bathrooms cleaned regularly.When contacted, principal of the college K Chitra said the students had represented issues regarding the hostel infrastructure to her.
