CPI(M) pickets Corporation zonal offices

More than 700 cadre of the Communist Party of India(Marxist) were removed by the police when they attempted to picket the South, North, West and East zone offices of the Coimbatore Corporation in protest against the decision of the State to entrust the work of drinking water supply to a private firm. The Polit Bureau member of the party, G. Ramakrishnan, who led the agitation, said that contrary to the justifications and explanations offered by the civic body defending its decision, the privatisation of the drinking water supply would certainly lead to disconnection of 1,500 public taps and indirect hike in water consumption charges.
