Man gets 3 years in jail for killing tiger

“He strewed poison over the buffalo’s carcass hoping that the tiger would return to feed the leftover meat. The tiger returned and fed on the meat and found dead in Anaimoolai on June 20, 2014,” said an official involved in the case.The investigating officials found a tin near the carcass of the tiger. Udhagamandalam: A 60-year-old man, accused of poisoning a female tiger in 2014, was convicted in the case and sentenced to three years’ imprisonment on Tuesday by the Kotagiri magistrate court.The accused, K Thimmaiyan of Chitthirampatti village in Thengumarahada poisoned the 8-year-old tiger in mid-June of 2014 as it killed his buffalo some days ago. “The postmortem report found the content of the tin was same as the poison used to kill the tiger,” said Selvam, Segur forest range officer.On Tuesday, the court jailed the man for three years and imposed a fine of Rs 10,500, which if he failed to pay, he will be imprisoned for another 3 months.In the past decade, this is the first time an accused is convicted in a case of tiger poaching or poisoning in the Nilgiris.
