Coimbatore: More than 100 students of the Government Arts College on Tuesday staged a protest, demanding better facilities at the college hostel. The students, who are staying at the college hostel at Race Course, said hostel toilets were not cleaned properly. Pointing out that 260 students were staying in the hostel that has only 60 rooms, they said there weren’t enough toilets for all the inmates. “Students, who have classes in morning shift, often find it difficult to get ready on time because of this.”A student protester said doors and windows of several rooms in the hostel were damaged. He said the breakfast timing was also inconvenient for them. “Breakfast is served from 7.30am to 9.00am. People, who have classes in morning shift, find it difficult to have breakfast within this one-and-a-half hours.”When visited the hostel, TOI found 18 toilets in the main hostel block and an additional 12 toilets in a separate block. People incharge of the hostel said they usually get the toilets and bathrooms cleaned regularly. “The college premises had not been cleaned for almost a week as the cleaning personnel had gone on a holiday.”Following the protest, college principal K Chitra met a group of student representatives to discuss the issue. When contacted, Chitra said the students had represented their issues regarding the hostel infrastructure. “A committee has visited the hostel to take stock of the works that needs to be done.”Chitra said the public works department (PWD) was incharge of the hostel infrastructure. “PWD officials said they have floated a tender and would repair damaged portions of the hostel on Wednesday. The college management has agreed to take care of issues that could be done by the college, such as placing television, water doctors and maintaining the ground and using it for sports activities.”
