Students learn lessons out in sweltering sun

Representatives of the high school section said the new building might look big, but only four classrooms were there.

Coimbatore: Corporation primary school at Kamaraj Nagar near Sundarapuram on Madukkarai Road had been suffering from space constrains for more than a year, forcing teachers to engage classes outdoors braving the sweltering sun. The school, which has 257 students in both English and Tamil medium from classes I to V, has only four classrooms.Parents said their wards had been facing several difficulties as they were made to sit on ground in the sun. A Maheshwari, a parent and member of parent-teacher association, said her child had fallen sick after she was made to attend the class outdoors. “The children are made to sit close to toilet and it makes them more uncomfortable,” Maheshwari, who is also a member of the school management committee, said.Presently, classes for Tamil medium IV and V are being held outdoors due to space crunch. Around 30 students each from these classes are made to sit outside to learn lessons. R Manoharan, another parent, said earlier the children were made to sit on sackcloth spread on the ground. “Now, we have bought some mats. But on rainy days, teachers have no choice but to put all the 257 children in the four classrooms.”When TOI visited the school on Saturday, around 30 students were seen writing exam outdoors by sitting on mats spread on the ground. In some classes, both the Tamil and the English medium students were made to sit together, with a single blackboard divided into two for them. In addition to this, headmistress’s room was also converted into a classroom.The school was constructed in 2002 under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan with classes I-V. In 2007, it was upgraded to a middle school and in 2011 it was made a high school. Later, a new building was constructed for the high school and it was opened last August.Parents said the high school section has been operating in the four classrooms of the primary school even after getting a new building, leading to space crunch. Representatives of the high school section said the new building might look big, but only four classrooms were there. “The remaining are labs and halls. The four classrooms belonging to the primary section was officially allotted to us and they can’t be given away.”The high school section has 270 students. high school teachers said they have 10 classrooms in all. “Besides the four in the new block and as many in the old block from the primary section, we have two more classrooms that were constructed using MP’s fund.”When contacted, a school education department official said he would look into the issue and find a solution soon.
