COIMBATORE: The city corporation collected Rs 1.28 lakh in the past 10 months as penalty from the public, whose properties were found to be breeding grounds of dengue mosquitoes.As a dengue preventive measure, corporation officials have been conducting door-to-door source reduction activities. “Corporation workers will destroy the sources and clean the premises a couple of times and warning notices will be issued only during the third inspection upon finding the sources on the premises. The drive is also being carried out at construction sites and vacant plots. “As many as 654 cases were reported last year,” he said.Corporation commissioner K Vijayakarthikeyan inspected houses in ward 47 on Monday and reviewed the works of DBCs.

Explaining that the inspections are conducted almost every day, an official from the corporation said that the civic body plans to intensify the drive.As a part of the source reduction activities, hundreds of domestic breeder checkers (DBC) were appointed to inspect houses and to eliminate potential sources that increases the number of dengue-causing aedes mosquitoes.The corporation collected Rs 1,28,450 as penalty and warning notices were issued to 2,54 people. “Corporation workers will destroy the sources and clean the premises a couple of times and warning notices will be issued only during the third inspection upon finding the sources on the premises. Depending upon the economic status of the residents and quantum of larva sources, penalty amount will be fixed from Rs 50. In some cases, instead of penalizing the residents, they are directed to provide banners and stickers to use during awareness programmes,” the official said.Insisting on the importance of keeping public places, including educational institutions and hospitals free of larvae as a large number of people would be infected from a single source, the official said that the workers have been cleaning the premises of hospitals and educational institutions.Citing it as one of the reasons for the decrease in dengue cases in the city, the official said that only 54 cases were reported in the last 10 months. “As many as 654 cases were reported last year,” he said.Corporation commissioner K Vijayakarthikeyan inspected houses in ward 47 on Monday and reviewed the works of DBCs.
