Coimbatore: The Sowripalayam-Peelamedu Road has been in a bad condition since the underground drainage work was taken up two years ago. After the drains were built, the road was not been relaid, Sowripalayam residents said. As a result, it has become unmotorable and many buses have stopped plying on the road.At least one two-wheeler user suffers a fall on the road every week, said V Nandagopal, a local resident. “In the last one month alone, three people fell off from motorcycles. One of them suffered a fracture. It is impossible for two-wheelers to ride on this road,” he told TOI.As a large trench dug up in front of the Sowripalayam Bus Stand is yet to be closed, many buses avoid the Sowripalayam Bridge, thus giving the whole area a miss. “Several buses like 95, which operates from Gandhipuram to Singanallur via the Sowripalayam Road, do not come to the bus stand. They stop before the Sowripalayam Bridge, which is 2km away from our area,” the residents said in a petition submitted to the collector on Monday. “This is affecting many students from the locality, who depend on buses to reach colleges like PSG, CIT and Krishnammal on the Avinashi Road.”They had approached the city corporation several times requesting to relay the road, but no action was taken, the residents said. “DMK MLA Karthik inspected the area and took up the issue with the authorities. However, there has been no action from their side also,” Nandagopal said. “ We want the road to be evened out even if not relaid properly.”
