Once we get the nod, tender will be called.”The corporation will have to shell out Rs 81crore to change 58,000 sodium-vapour lamps. “LED lamps are expensive than sodium-vapour lamps. But we will get the return on the investment within four to five years” the official added. The civic body has been paying over Rs 20crore per year to the Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation (Tangedco) for power. “Also, the lifespan of LED lamps is longer than the sodium-vapour lamps. Depending upon the usage, some last over eight years. But we have to replace sodium-vapour lamps once in four years,” another corporation official said. The corporation has been spending a huge amount and manpower for the maintenance of street lights and both of them could be saved to a large extend by using LED lamps. “The corporation allots over Rs 9crore per year for street lamp maintenance,” the official revealed.Welcoming the move, K Kathirmathiyon of Coimbatore Consumer Cause said the corporation would have saved a large portion of the power bill had it replaced all sodium-vapour lamps years ago. “Apart from being energy-efficient, the soft LED light is pleasing to the eye,” he said.
