Most fatal road accidents in Sulur police station limit

Coimbatore: Among the rural police in Coimbatore, limits under Sulur police station have reported highest fatal accidents from January to October 2018.In a way to reduce the fatal accidents, the rural police have deputed armed reserve police on Trichy Road on a temporary basis to regulate traffic during peak hours.According to data available with the Coimbatore rural police, 404 fatal accidents were reported in its limit claiming 443 people.The Sulur police station alone has reported 64 fatal accidents, claiming 71 lives.Of the 64 fatal accidents, 36 were reported on Trichy Road.MDMK district joint secretary and deputy secretary of Sulur Taluk, Trichy Road Expansion Struggle Committee S P Karunanidhi told TOI that the government had failed to expand the Trichy Road from Kangeyampalayam–Chinthamanipudur for a stretch of 7.5km.“We had petitioned MPs and the national highways department to expand the road so that it would reduce fatal accidents in the stretch. The number of deaths has increased on the stretch due to overspeed,” said Karunanidhi.He said the Sulur police station was formed during the British rule with 18 police personnel. The state government has not increased the manpower for the station since then. They were deputed at important junctions to regulate traffic during peak hours,” Baskaran said.

We have requested the superintendent of police to provide additional manpower to the Sulur police to regulate traffic,” he said.“Now, four policemen from armed reserve police were given to Sulur police station.
