The Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam office in Coimbatore wore a festive look on Sunday morning, for the venue was all set to host a wedding. The bride was Kausalya , whose husband Shankar was brutally hacked to death in broad daylight in Udumalaipettai in 2016. The fiesty youngster married Sakthi V, a Coimbatore-based parai artiste, who founded Nimirvu Kalaiyagam — an organisation that has a bunch of youngsters coming together to promote parai and paraiattam. It was a wedding with a difference. The bride and groom wore blue jeans, black shirt, sneakers and exchanged garlands made of vettiver. As part of the self-respect marriage, they took an oath and posed for pictures in front of Thanthai Periyar statue. This was followed by a dance to the beats of parai.Sakthi says, “Kausalya was a student at Nimirvu Kalaiyagam. She had approached us to learn parai and that’s when we realised that our paths were quite similar. The decision to marry was quite sudden. We couldn’t even inform many of our friends. We will now work towards our respective goals with more dedication. We will be a pillar of support to each other in the journey."“Sakthi and I don’t consider this marriage a major milestone in our lives. The only change is that we will continue our fight against caste system and killings together. Inter-caste marriages are not easy in our society. We will support all those couples who have had love marriages and married outside their community,” says Kausalya, who has turned a social activist and crusader against caste system after the demise of her first husband, Shankar. The wedding was attended by Shankar’s family.
