Airport staff to go on mass causal leave on December 28 to protest privatization move

Coimbatore: More than 100 non-executive workers with the city airport would go on causal lave on December 28 to register their protest against the move to privatize airports in Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow and Guwahati. “Also, people are now handing over their land to the government for the airport expansion activities. But if the airports are privatized, they would have to hand it over to a private entity,” he said.Kumar said non-executive employees with the city airport would stage a hunger strike for three days beginning Monday near the airport premises.

Coimbatore: More than 100 non-executive workers with the city airport would go on causal lave on December 28 to register their protest against the move to privatize airports in Thiruvananthapuram, Mangaluru, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Lucknow and Guwahati. The protest would be held under the aegis of Members of the Airport Authority Employees Union (AAEU).The move to privatize the airports might affect the job prospects of the present employees, said K Kumar, president of the city chapter of AAEU. “Also, people are now handing over their land to the government for the airport expansion activities. But if the airports are privatized, they would have to hand it over to a private entity,” he said.Kumar said non-executive employees with the city airport would stage a hunger strike for three days beginning Monday near the airport premises. He, however, said they won’t boycott work during the period.On December 28, a total of 110 non-executive employees would take part in the mass casual leave protest, he said. “This will affect flight operations as safety services, in which non-executive workers are involved, will be hit.” If executive workers too join the protest, the number of protestors would go up, Kumar said.The decision to bring the six airports under the public-private-partnership model was taken in the Union cabinet in November 8. Airport employees across the country have called for demonstrations against the move.
