Work in full swing to widen Railway Junction’s subway

“Work started last week and is proceeding in full swing. Coimbatore: Works have begun to widen the subway that leads to the platforms of the Coimbatore Railway Junction. As the work is going on, the cloakroom located along the subway will be shifted to the back entrance, Southern Railway sources said.Used by nearly 25,000 passengers a day, the subway has always been congested. “We are happy to look at the changes happening around the railway station and are eagerly waiting for the works to be finished. I am glad to see the ongoing work,” said 52-year-old Hepziba P.Lakshmi and Surendhar, an elderly couple, shared a similar feeling.

As the work is going on, the cloakroom located along the subway will be shifted to the back entrance, Southern Railway sources said.Used by nearly 25,000 passengers a day, the subway has always been congested. “Work started last week and is proceeding in full swing. The gradual increase in the number of commuters prompted us to conduct the extension work. It will facilitate easy movement of passengers,” a railway official told TOI.Work to set up escalators has also started at the staircase towards platform I & II, at a cost of Rs 75lakh. The ceiling work at the concourse will be completed by next week. A new AC waiting hall, which many passengers had demanded, will also be set up soon. The two waiting halls in use will be fitted with audio-visual facilities to disseminate information about the railway.“We will ensure that medical attention is available to passengers. They should contact the TTE in case of a medical emergency during the travel. Treatment will be free-of-cost,” the official added.Meanwhile, passengers expressed happiness over the makeover. “It is difficult to climb the stairs with heavy luggage. I am glad to see the ongoing work,” said 52-year-old Hepziba P.Lakshmi and Surendhar, an elderly couple, shared a similar feeling. “We are happy to look at the changes happening around the railway station and are eagerly waiting for the works to be finished. It would help many people like us. We carry bags and suitcases whenever we travel. It is difficult to climb the stairs with luggage.”
