Coconut, copra will fetch good price until March: Agri varsity

Coimbatore: Coconut and copra would fetch a better price for farmers until March, the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University (TNAU) said. According to a price analysis done by it, farmers could expect good quality coconuts to fetch a farm gate price of Rs 15-Rs 17 per piece, while good copra could fetch them Rs 105 per kg. The southern states together account for nearly 81% of the total coconut production in the country. It said due to short supply coconuts were brought from Karnataka to meet the demand. ‘The higher prices could be expected to prevail until March-end because it is the festive season across the state,” it said.The study also found that the damage caused to coconut plantations due to the cyclone Gaja and the upcoming festive season would spur the demand for coconuts.

Copra is also brought to the Perundurai market from Udumalpet, Palladam, Dharapuram, Gobichettipalayam and Pattukottai.TNAU forecast is based on the coconut and copra prices prevailed in the Avalpoonthurai regulated market in Erode for the past 18 years and a survey at Perundurai Agricultural Produces Cooperative Marketing Society in that district.While coconut is cultivated on 20.79 lakh hectares land across the country, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh are the main producers. The southern states together account for nearly 81% of the total coconut production in the country.
