Highway robbery case: Two surrender in Chennai court

Coimbatore: Two suspects in the highway robbery case surrendered in a magistrate court in Chennai on Thursday.Tamilselvan and Jayaprakash, both hailing from Vellore, surrendered before the metropolitan magistrate court -VII at George Town, police sources said.“We will get prisoner transit warrant from Coimbatore court and will bring them here. We are confident of recovering the stolen ornaments from them,” the officer said.Police had found a car used by the gang abandoned near Madukkarai on Tuesday. Most of the gang members hail from Vellore and Chennai, police sources said. We plan to take the duo into custody for interrogation,” a senior police officer said. “So far, we have identified eight people in connection with case.

But they managed to surrender in court to evade arrest.”While a special team is camping in Chennai, another team is at Thrissur in Kerala in pursuit of six more people in connection with the case.Preliminary investigation revealed that an eleven-member gang that came to Coimbatore in two cars stole the gold and silver ornaments worth Rs 98.05lakh belonging to Kerala-based Kalyan Jewellers on Monday. Most of the gang members hail from Vellore and Chennai, police sources said. One of them, who was detained by the special team on Thursday, is being grilled in an undisclosed place in Coimbatore.Police traced the gang members from the registration number of a car they used. “So far, we have identified eight people in connection with case. We are confident of recovering the stolen ornaments from them,” the officer said.Police had found a car used by the gang abandoned near Madukkarai on Tuesday. Forensic experts have lifted two fingerprints from the vehicle. The second car was found at Vazhukkuparai near Madukkarai on Wednesday.
